Whether you are wearing a wig or extensions you must make sure to keep it looking flawless! We all spend a pretty penny to purchase these gorgeous locks so we have to make sure to care for them properly. Remember, with proper care your wigs/extensions can last AT LEAST 1-3 years with the proper maintenance.
1. Use a Silk Bonnet OR Silk Pillowcase
To keep your extensions lasting, be sure to sleep with a silk bonnet or pillow. Cotton literally sucks the oil out of your extensions, causing them to look dry and lifeless. If you have a wig, store it somewhere neat or place it on a wig head so that it can maintain its style.
2. Wash at least every two weeks.
Make sure that you are using a moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner for your hair. Washing your wig/extensions and your natural hair is very important! You want to keep you hair healthy and growing underneath while making sure your virgin hair is clean and flawless as well. To see how I wash my wigs and what products I use, watch Episode 6 from my U-Part Wig Series.
3. Deep Condition & Detangle!
If you have wavy or curly hairstyles, sometimes the nape of the wig can get tangled and unmanageable if not cared for properly. Use a deep conditioner that will lock in the moisture and use a detangling brush to smooth out your expensive tresses! Comb from the bottom to the top and use a leave in conditioner on wavy or curly textured hair to ensure your hair is tangle-free. A deep condition at least once a month will keep hair soft and moisturized!
4. Minimize Heat.
Remember that your extensions are real hair, so treat them as such. Heat dries out your extensions, just as it does your natural hair. Personally, I love a super natural look. However, If I want to add curls to my hair, instead of heading straight for the curling iron, I prep my hair the night before with flexi rods so that I don't have to add additional heat in the morning. You can also try different styles such as braiding your hair, ponytails, half-up half-down hair do's as well which do not require additional heat to your tresses.
