Ever decided that you wanted to try this whole "thrifting" thing and get to a salvation army and have no idea what you are doing? Ever ask someone where they got something and get surprised when they tell you that they found it while thrifting? Ever wonder why every time you attempt to thrift you can't seem to find what you are looking for? Know this, you are not alone. This week I learned that thrifting is an art you have to master and can be a fun hobby or something to consider if you are interested in a career in fashion.
Today I was able to attend the Thrift & Sip event held at one of my favorite thrift stores in Detroit, Thrift On The Avenue. If you have read some of my Outfit Of The Day blog posts from last year, you will see that I wore beautiful one of a kind garments that I found at Thrift On The Ave! While tasty drinks were being served by Sumptuous Spirits five panelist of fashionable stylist prepared to drop some knowledge on how we can step our thrift game up!
Here is what I learned:
1. Be Open Minded.
Usually when we shop we tend to know exactly what we want to buy and only have tunnel vision on that. When it comes to thrifting it is a bit different. Be open minded and don't think about what you want, shop with no expectations.
2. Examine Before You Purchase.
Be observant of what you might potentially purchase. Check for stains, holes, smells, or anything else that may be a no deal on your thrift find. If it is slightly damaged, question whether it is something worth being repaired.
3. Think Outside The Box.
Sometimes something may catch your eye and you decide to try it on and it doesn't quite hug you the way you want it to. Consider taking it to a tailor if you feel your piece is something you can't pass up! You can also get creative and revamp a piece, such as transforming a regular jean skirt into a distressed high fashion jean skirt.
4. Sign Up For Coupons.
Can you believe you can get a deal on top of a deal? Yes, certain thrift stores offer certain coupons you can sign up and receive or will run certain promotions in the store. So that $5 dollar shirt can turn into a $2 shirt real quick!
5. Hire A Wardrobe Stylist To Thrift With You.
If you are truly considering revamping your wardrobe and want to shop like a stylist, consider shopping with one. There are certain stylist that offer a service where you can shop with them and they can help you find key pieces that you might have easily passed up!
Check out looks created by me on Polyvore or create your own account and learn to make your own. This really helps for me to visually see my style.
Overall, I had a great time at the event and learned so much! Hopefully these tips were helpful! Got any additional tips? Please make sure to list them below!
